Grand River in Bridgeport, Kitchener

Those of you who live in the area already know that we are experiencing high water levels in the Bridgeport Area. There is water flowing at quick speeds that has rose up and it’s almost touching the bottom of the bridge. I haven’t experienced levels like this since I moved to the area  in 1998. We have had high water levels but not like this. Those of you with small children, beware of the dangers.

The park that runs parallel with the river is completely flooded. I remember as a kid running around with rubber boots through the fields. This would not be possible now with the amount of water that has flooded the fields. While on my walk, taking pictures, I ran into many concerned families that were investigating the floods. They also couldn’t believe the amount of flooding that has occurred.

Thankfully, we have city staff that are monitoring and controlling the area. They are pumping water to make sure nearby streets don’t flood. I had a reader tell me about how Tyson street was completely flooded yesterday, and it is good to see that its not being neglected. It may look scary but we sure have a great response team in Kitchener-Waterloo.

The water is moving so fast that I couldn’t believe that people were bringing in kayaks and launching them into the water. Its not the water that is the problem, but all the debris that is floating that has been picked up from the sides of the river. The Grand River doesn’t experience high water levels regularly. Waterloo Regional Police and the emergency response team are recommending NOT to go into the river.
